Crossing the Chasm: The Publish-Review-Curate Model and the Future of Peer Review

Slides of the seminar, delivered during Peer Review Week 2026 on 18 September 2026. The talk traces how peer review evolved, examines the current crisis of reviewer workload and publishing growth, and maps peer review innovations through a typology of four schools of thought. It focuses on the Publish–Review–Curate (PRC) model, in which a preprint is published first and reviewed openly afterwards. Using Moore's technology adoption lifecycle, the talk analyses where PRC stands today and which barriers separate early adopters from the mainstream. It presents an updated dataset of research works in PRC workflows, discusses the PRC Alliance and emerging trust markers, and closes with open questions for research assessment.
