Khosrow Mirza's Diplomatic Mission to Russia and Its Commemorative Medal

This article examines Khosrow Mirza’s diplomatic mission to Russia in 1829, undertaken after the killing of Alexander Griboyedov in Tehran and amid the danger of renewed Russo-Persian conflict. As the son of Crown Prince Abbas Mirza, Khosrow Mirza headed an extraordinary embassy to St Petersburg to deliver Persia’s formal apology and restore relations with Tsar Nicholas I. The mission proved highly successful, helping to ease political tensions and strengthen diplomatic relations between Qajar Iran and the Russian Empire. Particular attention is given to the commemorative medal struck by the Imperial Russian Mint in honour of Khosrow Mirza’s visit. With the portrait of Nicholas I on the obverse and a Persian inscription on the reverse, the medal provides an important numismatic and historical record of this significant episode in nineteenth-century Russo-Persian diplomacy.
