A Study on the Role of SDH (Subtitling for the D/deaf and Hard-of-Hearing) in Audiovisual Content on Social Media Platforms: The Case of TRT Digital Broadcasting Channels

With the advancements in technology, it can be said that it has become easier to access developments taking place in many parts of the world. In this context, considering the global usage rates, social media platforms are believed to play a significant role. However, among the audiovisual content shared on social media platforms, there may be individuals who require assistance to understand the content. One such group consists of individuals with hearing impairments, and the other consists of deaf individuals. As a type of subtitle translation, SDH (Subtitling for the D/deaf and Hard-of-Hearing) can facilitate these individuals’ understanding of audiovisual content. Within the scope of this study, the social media platforms of TRT’s digital broadcasting channels, which target audiences in various regions of the world, were examined. In this study, the document analysis method was used to identify the social media platforms of relevant digital broadcast channels, and evaluations were conducted within the parameters established for the study. The aim of this study is to raise awareness that individuals with hearing impairments and deaf individuals can also follow content shared on social media platforms. This study seeks to highlight that audiovisual content shared on digital broadcast channels on social media platforms can be viewed by individuals with hearing impairments and the deaf, and to emphasize the importance of considering these factors when sharing content. Based on the study’s data, evaluations and recommendations were provided.
