The Selection Mirage: Differential Effective Thresholds, Selective Survivor Excellence, and the Mis-Inference of Fairness
A system need not exclude a population outright in order to impose a substantially greater effective burden upon it. Two populations may pursue the same outcome under formally identical rules while facing systematically different requirements for entering, remaining, recovering from error, or advancing. This paper calls the resulting domain-general pattern the Selection Mirage. Where differential effective burdens operate, members of one population may need to supply additional performance, credentials, persistence, error avoidance, resilience, or other compensating advantages to obtain equivalent outcomes. This additional requirement is termed the Exceptionality Tax. Differential selection can then alter the composition of the observable survivor pool by disproportionately removing less exceptional members of the higher-threshold population. The survivors who remain may therefore be unusually capable. The resulting population can generate a second-order inferential error. Observers encounter the successful survivors more readily than comparable people filtered out and may treat survivor excellence as evidence that the underlying selection process imposed comparable burdens. This paper calls that error Proof by Survivor. The framework's principal organizing diagnostic, the Ordinary Test, asks: Among people who were comparable before the relevant selection process materially altered them, does group membership systematically change the performance required, the mistakes tolerated, or the opportunities for recovery needed to obtain and maintain the same outcome? The Ordinary Test specifies a comparison for empirical designs to operationalize; it is not itself a statistical estimator. None of the framework's component mechanisms is claimed as new. The proposed contribution is a domain-general integration linking differential effective burdens to selective survivor excellence and then to mis-inference from the survivor population, while extending analysis beyond entry to persistence, error tolerance, recovery, and advancement through the Ordinary Test. The Selection Mirage is therefore a research-organizing framework that generates application-specific empirical hypotheses, not a universal estimator of fairness.
