AIzen and AIzenship: Introducing New Concepts for Intensive Human-AI Engagement

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming embedded in everyday cognitive, academic, professional, and creative activities. However, the general term “AI user” does not adequately distinguish occasional users from individuals whose engagement with artificial intelligence is intensive, recurrent, multi-contextual, and deeply integrated into their routines. This conceptual preprint proposes and defines the terms AIzen, AIzens, and AIzenship as a vocabulary for describing this emerging form of human–AI engagement. An AIzen is defined as an individual for whom recurrent, intensive, and multi-contextual engagement with artificial intelligence has become an integrated component of cognitive, academic, professional, creative, or everyday activity. The paper further introduces AIzenship as the degree to which artificial intelligence is continuously and integrally embedded within an individual's activities, routines, and practices. Five preliminary dimensions are proposed: intensity of AI use, continuity of engagement, breadth of AI use, integration of AI into activities and workflows, and human–AI agency. This Version 1.0 documents the conceptual formulation of AIzen and AIzenship by Eihab A. Dawi and provides a foundation for subsequent theoretical development, empirical investigation, and potential development of an AIzenship measurement scale.
