A theoretical framework for isotope production at the SPES ISOL facility: Magnesium-28 as a case-study

Abstract Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) is one of the techniques used for the production of exotic nuclides. This study presents a workflow for the theoretical modeling of the ISOL production of Mg-28. The production of isotopes in the target irradiated by protons, the diffusion and effusion processes leading to the release of the species from the target and the laser ionization of the atoms for the formation of the radioactive ion beam have been analyzed combining Monte Carlo simulations and theoretical models, in order to optimize the parameters of the system which most affect the production yield of the isotope.
