Abstract

FINDING: Penrose tilings achieve aperiodicity via two rhombi (thick/thin) whose areas and vertex configurations encode the golden ratio, with a 2024 proof extending this to the "hat" (Einstein) tile via golden-ratio-based substitution rules. | MATH: Thick rhombus angles 72°/108°; thin rhombus 36°/144°. Area ratio = φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. Vertex matching rules enforce inflation/deflation substitution matrices with eigenvalues φ² and −φ⁻¹ (or φ and −φ⁻¹ depending on convention). For the hat tile: aperiodicity proof (arXiv:2403.09640) uses a substitution tiling with scaling factor φ² and a derived "golden ratio" in the tile's edge-length ratios (specifically, the hat's boundary vectors involve √(2+φ) and √(3−φ) combinations). | CONNECTION: Directly encodes φ (1.618) and its reciprocal φ⁻¹ (0.618) in tile area ratios and inflation scaling. The 5-fold symmetry (forbidden in periodic crystals) maps to the icosahedral root system H₃ — the same symmetry group underlying quasicrystals.
