Will consumers continue to use smart wearable devices? Validating the technology integration model

Purpose Despite numerous studies investigating continuance intention to use smart wearable devices (SWDs), an understanding of the integration of technology features and human psychological factors in a single model is limited. This study aims to examine factors that influence the continuance intention to use SWDs by empirically validating the technology integration model (TIM). Design/methodology/approach A self-administered online survey questionnaire was used to collect data among consumers who have experienced using SWDs in Malaysia. A total of 309 responses were considered valid for further analysis. SmartPLS 4-SEM (partial least squares) was employed to test the hypotheses. Findings The findings indicate that technological factors (i.e. healthology, perceived aesthetics) and agency feature (i.e., usability) are critical in explaining perceived usefulness and subsequently lead to confirmation. Perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment have a significant positive effect on confirmation, while social influence has a significant positive effect on enjoyment and consumer brand identification. The findings also reveal that habit and confirmation have a significant positive direct effect on continuance intention to use SWDs. Practical implications This study provides actionable insights for developing SWDs strategies by emphasising technological features attributes and human psychological factors that motivate consumers to increase the likelihood of continuance intention to use rather than abandon it after a short period of usage. Social implications This study has important social implications for promoting sustained engagement with smart wearable devices (SWDs) as tools for preventive healthcare and healthier lifestyles. By combining health-related functionality, usability and aesthetically appealing design with enjoyment and habit-forming features, SWDs can encourage individuals to regularly monitor physical activity and other health indicators, potentially improving health awareness and supporting early behavioural intervention through improved self-management of well­being. Originality/value This study offers a novel theoretical understanding of TIM by integrating both technological features, confirmation and psychological factors into a single model. TIM explains the relationship between individuals and technology, emphasising parsimony and practicality in daily life.
