Interactive multimedia for Arabic language learning based on contextual teaching and learning using Kotobee

Abstract The study intervention was associated with development and evaluation of CTL-based interactive multimedia for Arabic language learning using the Kotobee platform in higher education. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach integrated with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design involving 50 students (20 male and 30 female) at the Arabic Language Center of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Data were collected through expert validation, questionnaires, observations, interviews, and pretest and posttest assessments. Statistical analyses included the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, Independent Sample t-test, Mann–Whitney test, and N-Gain analysis. The findings indicated statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups following the intervention. The experimental group provided a higher increase in learning interest (76.64%) compared to the control group (41.26%). The results further suggest that integrating CTL principles into the Kotobee platform may support more engaging and contextually meaningful Arabic language learning experiences. In addition, the multimedia product was evaluated as highly feasible in terms of display, interactivity, practicality, and instructional content. Although the findings are limited to a single institutional context and a relatively short intervention period, the findings indicate a preliminary empirical evidence that CTL-based interactive multimedia able to support student engagement and learning interest in technology-enhanced Arabic language learning environments.
