Validity of S3-NIV questionnaire for COPD patients with home non-invasive ventilation, in a Turkish population

S 3 -NIV questionnaire is developed to evaluate patient centered outcomes such as respiratory symptoms, sleep quality and side effects related to noninvasive ventilation (NIV) treatment. We aimed to produce a Turkish translation of the questionnaire and evaluate the validity in COPD patients with long term home NIV (LTH-NIV). Stable patients under LTH-NIV treatment with the diagnosis of respiratory failure due to COPD were included. St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Turkish translation of S 3 -NIV questionnaire were administered. The Turkish version was established through a standardized translation and back-translation process. The study population comprised 76 COPD patients, of whom 19.5% had concomitant obstructive sleep apnea. Internal consistency was good, with a Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.86 for the total score, 0.75 for the respiratory symptoms subscore, and 0.78 for the sleep and side effects subscore. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure was 0.71, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was significant ( p < 0.001), supporting factor analysis. Parallel analysis confirmed a two-factor structure consistent with the original questionnaire. Principal component analysis with Varimax rotation explained 67.1% of the total variance. S 3 -NIV total and subscale scores demonstrated strong correlations with all SGRQ domains, whereas correlations with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were weaker. S 3 -NIV questionnaireis a simple and valid tool to evaluate respiratory and sleep symptoms and NIV-related side effects. S 3 -NIV questionnaire can be used as a routine clinical tool to assess patient-centered outcomes as an addition to physiological monitoring.

Abstract

S 3 -NIV questionnaire is developed to evaluate patient centered outcomes such as respiratory symptoms, sleep quality and side effects related to noninvasive ventilation (NIV) treatment. We aimed to produce a Turkish translation of the questionnaire and evaluate the validity in COPD patients with long term home NIV (LTH-NIV).
