Neurodevelopmental therapy in NICUs that care for infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization in preterm-born infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is characterized by initial acute disease followed by a prolonged period of recovery. Rapidly evolving developmental needs require the support of a multidisciplinary team [ 1 ]. However, little is known about optimal frequency, intensity, or content of developmental therapy in this group of vulnerable infants. We conducted a point-prevalence study describing therapy staffing in NICUs that have multidisciplinary programs for infants with BPD. We aimed to provide data for benchmarking and to support future work to advance developmental care and improve outcomes of infants with BPD.
