Psychological Readiness in Emergency Response: Training, Team Coordination, and Professional Support Under Crisis Conditions

Abstract: Emergency work requires professionals to convert knowledge into coordinated action under uncertainty, time pressure, emotional intensity, and fatigue. This narrative review examines psychological readiness through four linked components: knowledge, enacted competence, team integration, and sustainable readiness. Drawing on research in disaster training, psychological first aid, simulation, teamwork, occupational mental health, fatigue, and post-incident support, it proposes a diagnostic framework for distinguishing failures that may appear operationally similar but arise at different levels. Knowledge deficits may require instruction; failures to enact known skills may require rehearsal or task redesign; coordination failures may require changes in team processes; and declining performance under cumulative demand may require organizational responses involving workload, recovery, or supervision. Five testable propositions translate the framework into research questions. Psychological readiness is presented not as a personality trait, diagnosis, or fitness score, but as an organizing framework for training, team performance, and system design.
