From Ritual to Reasoning: Estimation Thinking as an Inferential Framework for Educational Leadership Research

Purpose For several decades, scholars across statistics, psychology, and research methodology have questioned the widespread reliance on null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) and dichotomous decision making based on fixed significance thresholds. Although these critiques have influenced methodological reform across the social sciences, their impact on the inferential culture of educational leadership research has remained limited. This conceptual article argues that the field may be entering an early transition toward Estimation Thinking as an alternative framework for quantitative reasoning. Conceptual Approach Drawing on historical and conceptual analyses of statistical debates and methodological reform, the article traces how NHST emerged from distinct statistical traditions and became institutionalized through graduate training, statistical software, and publication practices. Building on this historical foundation, the article develops Estimation Thinking as a broader inferential framework rather than simply a set of improved reporting practices. Key Argument The article proposes five estimation-centered reorientations for quantitative inquiry: framing research questions around estimation, interpreting effect magnitude and estimation precision as primary evidence, determining the strength of inference through reasoning with uncertainty, determining the scope of inference through contextual understanding, and building cumulative knowledge through progressive refinement. Together, these reorientations constitute a coherent inferential architecture that shifts quantitative inquiry from threshold-based decision making toward estimation-oriented reasoning. Implications Estimation Thinking does not require abandoning familiar statistical methods. Rather, it reorients how quantitative evidence is framed, interpreted, and accumulated. By emphasizing inferential reasoning over dichotomous decision making, the proposed framework provides a foundation for strengthening research practice, peer review, editorial leadership, doctoral training, and the long-term accumulation of knowledge in educational leadership research.
