Advances in the study of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors for peritoneal dialysis
Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are a novel class of hypoglycemic agents widely used in clinical practice in recent years. Recent studies have revealed that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 is expressed in human peritoneal mesothelial and vascular endothelial cells, suggesting its potential involvement in peritoneal injury and ultrafiltration failure during peritoneal dialysis. Treatment with SGLT2is may alleviate peritoneal inflammation, fibrosis, and angiogenesis, improving ultrafiltration failure. Therefore, SGLT2is hold promise as a novel therapeutic approach for mitigating peritoneal injury and enhancing peritoneal function. A growing number of clinical studies are emerging, although most still remain in the early stages. This review highlights the role and mechanisms of SGLT2is in addressing peritoneal injury and ultrafiltration failure, with the aim of offering new therapeutic strategies to prevent complications associated with peritoneal dialysis.
