The vocal mind in classical singing: an interdisciplinary theoretical synthesis of its development, structure, function, and affective states.

Classical singing is commonly described through the observable dimensions of vocal technique, musical competence, interpretation, language, stage performance, and emotional expression. Such descriptions, although necessary, do not fully account for the complex cognitive and neuropsychological processes through which a singer perceives, represents, memorizes, predicts, produces, monitors, modifies, and emotionally regulates vocal performance. The present study proposes the concept of the Vocal Mind as an interdisciplinary theoretical construct designed to describe this integrated system. The Vocal Mind is defined as the dynamic configuration of innate predispositions and acquired abilities, together with psychological, emotional, neurological, cognitive, sensory, motor, linguistic, musical, and bodily processes that contribute to the realization of vocal performance (D’Urso, 2026). The construct is not intended to designate a discrete cerebral structure or a single neuroanatomical “centre” of singing. Rather, it provides a conceptual framework for integrating empirical findings concerning the distributed neural organization of music and language, auditory and somatosensory processing, musical memory, prediction and motor control, vocal feedback, neuroplasticity, expertise, emotional expression, and performance anxiety. The study adopts an interdisciplinary theoretical approach based on a critical narrative synthesis of literature in cognitive neuroscience, music cognition, psychoacoustics, psychology, linguistics, vocal science, and vocal pedagogy. Particular attention is given to research on musicians and singers, while developmental studies concerning prenatal auditory experience, infancy, language, musical exposure, and environmental influences are incorporated to account for the longitudinal formation of vocal abilities. The resulting framework is organized around five mutually dependent dimensions: the nature, development, structure, functioning, and affective states of the Vocal Mind. The analysis suggests that singing should be understood neither as a purely muscular act nor as the expression of an abstract musical intelligence. It is an embodied, predictive, perceptual, motor, linguistic, musical, and affective activity in which the singer simultaneously constitutes the performer and the instrument. From this perspective, vocal pedagogy may benefit from moving beyond an exclusively technical model toward a more integrated understanding of the cognitive and bodily processes underlying vocal learning and performance. The concept of the Vocal Mind is therefore proposed as a theoretical and pedagogical framework capable of connecting otherwise fragmented areas of knowledge and of supporting a more scientifically informed conception of the education of singers and singing teachers.
