Exploring Mechanisms, Methods, and Measurement in Mindfulness Research: A Scoping Review of Community-Based Interventions

Abstract Objectives Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have increasingly been implemented outside clinical environments and within community settings such as schools, workplaces, community health programs, and digital platforms. While the effectiveness of MBIs for improving psychological well-being is well established, less is known about the processes through which community-based mindfulness programs operate, the methodological approaches used to evaluate them, and the measurement strategies used in these contexts. This scoping review aimed to conduct a descriptive evidence mapping of the current literature on community-based mindfulness interventions, focusing on intervention types, processes, methodological approaches, and outcome measures. Method A scoping review was used to examine peer-reviewed literature published between 2014 and 2024. Articles were identified through searches of PubMed, JSTOR, and Web of Science, with the completeness of the search verified through citation chaining. Studies were included if they examined mindfulness interventions implemented in community or real-world settings and reported empirical or implementation-related findings. Data were extracted on study design, population, intervention characteristics, outcomes, and measurement approaches. Results A total of 45 studies met inclusion criteria. The reviewed literature demonstrated increasing global interest in community-based mindfulness programs across diverse populations, including adolescents, migrant communities, older adults, and individuals with chronic health conditions. The most commonly implemented interventions were Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), delivered through in-person, digital, and hybrid modalities. Across studies, mindfulness interventions were generally associated with reductions in stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, along with improvements in emotional regulation and well-being. The review also highlighted the importance of cultural adaptation, community engagement, and accessible delivery models. Conclusions Community-based mindfulness interventions show strong potential for promoting mental health and resilience across diverse populations. However, methodological heterogeneity and inconsistent measurement approaches remain challenges for the field. Future research should prioritize rigorous evaluation designs, culturally responsive implementation strategies, and standardized measurement frameworks to strengthen the evidence base for community-based mindfulness programs.
