AN OVERVIEW OF CURRENT RESEARCH ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTHRAQUINONES AS ANTICANCER AGENTS
Objective: In this study, some scientific studies on anthraquinone compounds that have been synthesized in recent years and have been found to have high in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity are summarized. It is aimed to contribute to the design and development of new anthraquinone derivative drugs that are more effective in cancer treatment and can overcome drug resistance.Result and Discussion: Anthraquinones are a privileged class of compounds that can be obtained from natural and synthetic sources and have anticancer properties with versatile mechanisms. Anthracyclines, which are potent topoisomerase inhibitors, are members of this class that are frequently used in cancer chemotherapy. Literature data suggest that new anthraquinone derivatives developed through structural modifications can exhibit better antiproliferative activity against resistant cancer cells than currently existing anthracyclines and may be more effective antitumor drug candidates.
