The Sphere of Changes - A Possible Common Structure in the Odyssey, the Theogony, and the Book of Changes

This extended research presentation introduces the Sphere of Changes, a geometric structure in which the 64 hexagrams of the Chinese Book of Changes (Yijing) are arranged on a sphere according to a finite sequence of seven mathematical rules. The presentation then explores a possible correspondence between this structure and ancient Greek traditions, particularly Hesiod’s Theogony and Homer’s Odyssey. The proposed correspondences concern genealogical sequences, spatial organization, symmetry, numerical relationships, movements, and the positioning of mythological figures within the spherical structure. Particular attention is given to recurring numbers such as 18, 50, and 108, and to possible structural relationships between Greek and early Chinese mythological traditions. The research also considers the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, the Eleusinian Mysteries, Persephone, and selected archaeological evidence from the Mycenaean and ancient Chinese worlds. The work is presented as an exploratory and unconventional hypothesis. The proposed correspondences do not, by themselves, establish historical contact or a common origin between the Greek and Chinese traditions. The possible historical implications remain open questions requiring further investigation. This extended presentation contains additional correspondences, interpretations, diagrams, and supporting material beyond the shorter research presentation. The research is ongoing, with further investigation of the Iliad and other Greek myths.
