Information asymmetry as a determinant of SME financing constraints in emerging economies: How institutional arrangements and digital financial innovation reshape access to external capital
This paper examines the role of information asymmetry in shaping small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financing constraints in emerging economies. It synthesizes recent literature on the informational frictions that affect traditional credit markets, the institutional and borrower-side factors that influence access to finance, and the technological mechanisms developed to reduce informational opacity. The review shows that limited collateral, weak financial records, short credit histories and insufficiently transparent business information increase lenders’ screening costs and may result in credit rationing, loan rejection, unfavorable borrowing conditions and borrower discouragement. Relationship lending, credit-information systems, banking competition, financial literacy, public guarantees and institutional development can partially mitigate these constraints by improving borrower evaluation and reducing uncertainty. More recent mechanisms, including FinTech, digital finance, crowdfunding, alternative data and supply-chain finance, further expand the information available to lenders and investors by transforming transaction histories, commercial relationships and digital activities into observable signals of firm quality. However, technological innovation does not eliminate adverse selection, as effective financing still depends on data quality, trust, regulation and credible information transmission. The paper concludes that improving SME access to finance requires an integrated approach combining stronger information infrastructures, capable financial institutions, borrower preparedness and appropriately regulated digital financing mechanisms
