Playful Performativity? Considering the Sociological Relevance of the “Performative Male” Trend

The online meme of the “performative male” is a composite of interests, behaviors, and props that convey a new “sensitive” man. As a viral and satirical trend, the performative male phenomenon raises important questions around gender performances and heteronormative relationship expectations. In this essay, we describe what the performative male is, detailing its online development, its key characteristics, and its embodiment in offline spaces. We then explain how the performative male can be conceptualized via theories of masculinity and comparable trends in men’s lifestyles. Finally, we discuss why the performative male trend warrants sociological interrogation in proposing notable research problematics.
