Proposal and elucidation of a novel coding classification for maxillary impacted canines from an orthodontic perspective

Objectives: Impacted maxillary canines are a challenge in the field of orthodontics, which requires an accurate diagnosis and treatment approach. Various factors are considered in determining the complexity of the treatment, which are patient age, position of the impacted tooth, presence of any dental malocclusion, and the presence of teeth surrounding the impacted tooth. This paper will seek to offer a new classification of maxillary impacted canines based on a number of diagnostic factors. Material and Methods: This system was created from the retrospective study of maxillary canine cases with the help of diagnostic parameters synthesized from existing literature with the objective of integrating ten diagnostic parameters such as age, mesiodistal space, positional relationship, angular relationship, root structure, and buccopalatinal position, among others, with values attributed to each variable using a color-coded system for better applicability. This would help overcome the limitations of single-factor assessments. Results: The proposed system of classification allows for a comprehensive approach in determining the complexity of MIC. This allows orthodontists to evaluate the severity of impaction, approximate the time required in treatment, as well as the approach to be taken. This is because it takes various diagnostic elements into account. Conclusion: This novel classification system offers a structured, multidimensional approach for organizing the diagnostic features of MIC. By integrating multiple parameters, it provides a standardized framework that may support clinicians in assessing case complexity and planning orthodontic management. Further studies are required to validate its diagnostic performance and its potential impact on clinical outcomes.

Various factors are considered in determining the complexity of the treatment, which are patient age, position of the impacted tooth, presence of any dental malocclusion, and the presence of teeth surrounding the impacted tooth.
