Legume Fodder in the Age of Climate Change: Resilience, Risks, and Revolutionary Solutions

Legume fodder crops are vital for sustainable agriculture and global food security because they fix nitrogen and enhance soil health. Legumes make up just 1.1% of the world's food supply, despite their many advantages. Cattle weight gain increases by 17% and milk output by 9.9% when forage legumes such as alfalfa and soybeans are integrated into livestock systems. But there is a serious threat from climate change. By 2050, yield decreases of 10-49% are predicted as a result of changes in precipitation and temperature. Elevated CO2 may promote growth, but it also causes a “dilution effect,” which lowers protein content by up to 30% and depletes vital micronutrients like iron (16%) and zinc (9.4%). A diversified approach is needed to reduce these dangers. Agronomic optimization, which involves modifying planting dates, densities, and water management, is one of the main interventions. ii) Soil and Pest Stewardship, which includes integrated pest management (IPM), reduced tillage, and cover crops. iii) Systemic innovation, which combines strong policy changes with genetic advancement through climate modeling. In order to maintain the nutritional value and productivity of legume systems and guarantee that they continue to be a vital component of the global food networks, such coordinated efforts are crucial.
