Dao: The Art of the Long Game · 《道之一盘大棋》 is a 22-chapter compiled series by Dr Alice Jing Shan 单景, applied systems philosopher, independent researcher, and originator and developer of Relational Dynamics™: Theory of System Trajectories. This Version 1 collection brings together essays originally written and published in early 2026 on AJS Substack and, in part, on the Cynefin Co. guest blog. The collection explores path, pattern, position, sequence, relation, timing, formation, coherence, constraint, system trajectory, and future possibility across philosophy, complex systems, human systems, language, artificial intelligence, reasoning, learning, governance, risk, organisations, institutions, and social life. These essays are not traditional commentaries on Daoism, nor an attempt to translate ancient Chinese thought into contemporary complexity terminology. The intellectual lineages involved entered the author’s life differently. Chinese language, culture, and ways of thinking form a lived intellectual lineage: inherited, inhabited, spoken, and repeatedly reinterpreted through life. The languages of education, research, philosophy, complex systems, and artificial intelligence came later through study, academic training, professional practice, empirical research, and cross-disciplinary encounter. Dao: The Art of the Long Game brings these trajectories into relation without collapsing them into one another. It is, in part, an experiment in building communicative and intellectual infrastructure: an interface through which enduring philosophical questions, recurring patterns across complex and human systems, and distinctly contemporary questions of AI, meaning, judgement, learning, governance, knowledge formation, and human–artificial relations can be encountered together. Across the series, Dao (道) becomes an interface for thinking about path, sequence, relation, timing, position, formation, coherence, and long-game orientation. The five-part Go (围棋) sequence examines field perception, position, encirclement, system formation, collapse, and intelligence, including a reflection on AlphaGo’s Move 37 and what it reveals about intelligence beyond the obvious. Later chapters move through mutual generation, Dao and Li (理), coupling and sequence, relation, order of entry, interfaces, time, linguistic and translational failure, and the emerging relationship between human and artificial reasoning. The collection also develops ideas associated with From AI to AIR, including AIR as Augmented Intelligence Reasoning, and situates artificial intelligence within a wider inquiry into the conditions under which human and artificial systems reason, learn, coordinate, form meaning, and evolve under constraint over time. Relational Dynamics™: Theory of System Trajectories provides the developing theoretical architecture through which these observations are brought into relation. Relational Dynamics™ is an original systems lens developed by Dr Alice Jing Shan for inquiry into how systems form, stabilise, drift, adapt, and sometimes collapse under constraint over time. Its upstream ontological proposition is: Reality is relational dynamics under constraint over time. A downstream working frame is: Excellence is capacity held in coherence under constraint over time. A recurring proposition across the work is: A path repeated over time becomes pattern. The essays in this collection should not be read simply as applications of a finished theory. They are also part of the intellectual trajectory through which Relational Dynamics™ itself became more explicit. In this sense, the collection preserves not only a set of arguments but also aspects of their formation, sequence, publication context, and conceptual development over time. This compiled Version 1 establishes a stable, versioned citation coordinate for that trajectory. The essays remain close to their original public essay form, with light editorial framing and elements of their original publication architecture deliberately retained. This reflects a broader commitment within AJS to traceable intellectual infrastructure, in which ideas, their relations, provenance, and trajectories of formation remain visible rather than being retrospectively flattened into a finished intellectual object. Traceability is part of the method. The collection is made freely available because the author intends the work to remain open enough to travel while traceable enough to retain its authorship, formation, and conceptual boundaries. Open access is not the absence of structure. It is an invitation to encounter the work directly, cite it precisely, test it against other fields and realities, and allow new relations to form around it.
