The Concept of Native Wisdom: An Indigenous Management Capability

Abstract This paper explores the concept of native wisdom as an indigenous management capability within the context of African organizational settings. Adopting a theoretical and exploratory approach, the study re-conceptualizes native wisdom as a strategic, culturally embedded resource that enhances managerial effectiveness and organizational relationships. The paper identifies five core dimensions of native wisdom such as cultural insight, communal orientation, ethical prudence, experiential judgment, and relational harmony which collectively shape decision-making, leadership behavior, and workplace interactions. Drawing on the knowledge-based view and socio-cultural perspectives, the study argues that native wisdom represents a unique form of tacit knowledge that is difficult to replicate and therefore contributes to sustained organizational advantage. It further demonstrates that leaders who integrate native wisdom into their practices are better positioned to foster trust, manage conflict, and promote collaboration within diverse organizational environments. The paper also contributes to the development of contextualized African management theory by challenging the dominance of Western-centric models and emphasizing the relevance of indigenous knowledge systems. Practical implications highlight the need for organizations to incorporate cultural competence, experiential learning, and ethical sensitivity into leadership development and management practices. The study positions native wisdom as a critical driver of organizational effectiveness and a foundation for more inclusive and contextually relevant management frameworks. Keywords: Native Wisdom, Indigenous management capability, Cultural insight, Communal orientation, Experiential judgment
