Revising Claims in AI-Assisted Philosophical Inquiry

AI assistance can contribute substantially to philosophical questioning, formalization, criticism, and redaction. Evaluating that contribution requires an account of the inquiry through which claims are formed and revised. This paper develops a proposed method for AI-assisted conceptual research, distinguishing discovery provenance, argumentative warrant, and a participant's epistemic integration of a claim. It separates the roles of interlocution, source discovery, formalization, drafting, editing, and verification, and places sources, objects, critics, and institutions within the field of inquiry. A labelled analytical reconstruction from surviving research notes examines an inference from historical social formation to a requirement of current interpersonal exchange. A finite countermodel identifies the missing logical connection, while source engagement prevents a misleading attribution to recognition theory. The reconstruction supplies a worked test of revision discipline, with the original conversation's gaps retained. Comparisons with reflective inquiry, social epistemology, and recent arguments about language models clarify the method's antecedents and limits. The paper proposes proportionate practices for criticism, responsible reliance, and accurate disclosure. Its effectiveness across research settings and its contribution beyond existing methods remain open to evaluation.
