European blackflies: accepted and questionable species (Diptera, Simuliidae)

Primary and secondary published sources on European blackflies were systematically examined, and relevant data were extracted and compiled into a comprehensive inventory of extant species. All non-synonymised species-level taxa reported from Europe were incorporated into a raw data pool, comprising 268 taxa. A basic core set of species, containing 261 taxa, was derived from the raw data pool by excluding formally unnamed taxa—specifically two morphoforms and five cytoforms (including one hypothetical species)—and two nomina nuda . This also included the reassessment of Simulium aff. tuberosum and the revalidation of two species: Simulium annulipes Becker, 1908 (cytoform C of Simulium ruficorne Macquart, 1838) and Simulium beckeri Roubaud, 1906 (cytoforms A1/A2 of S. ruficorne ). The core set of species was subsequently subdivided into two principal subsets: the List of accepted species, comprising 233 taxa valid under the ICZN and reliably documented in Europe, and the List of questionable species, comprising 28 taxa requiring further verification due to unresolved taxonomy, uncertain identifications, or insufficient evidence of their occurrence in Europe.
