Lower Devonian crinoids from the Basque Massifs (Western Pyrenees, Northeast Spain)

Abstract Two new exquisitely preserved crinoids Eifelocrinus baztani n. sp. and Gastrocrinus canteri n. sp. are described from the late Emsian (Lower Devonian) Western Pyrenees in Northern Spain. Specimens were collected in the Cinco Villas Massif, which is considered part of the Basque Massifs. The material is preserved in finely laminated mudstones from the “Arizakun Limestone” associated with a rich invertebrate fauna. In terms of the paleobiogeography Eifelocrinus and Gastrocrinus were first reported from the Devonian of Germany, but the former is also known from the Cantabrian Zone.
