Lightweight Aggregate Concrete for Structural Load Reduction

Lightweight aggregate concrete, commonly designated as LWAC, is an advancedcement-based composite developed to reduce structural self-weight while maintaining adequate compressive strength, stiffness, durability, and serviceability. Thetechnology replaces conventional mineral aggregate with porous particles such asexpanded clay, expanded shale, pumice, sintered fly ash, expanded glass, and selected recycled lightweight aggregates. The reduction in density is achieved through controlled internal porosity. However, the same porosity that reduces dead load may also reduce aggregate stiffness, tensile strength, elastic modulus, and resistance to localized fracture. Consequently, the engineering objective is not simply to minimize density, but to optimize therelationship between density, strength, stiffness, fracture energy, durability, andconstructability. The governing behavior of LWAC can be described using continuum mechanics,composite-material theory, fracture mechanics, poromechanics, transport theory, and nonlinear constitutive modeling. A suitable design objective is expressed asa constrained optimization problem in which density is minimized while strength, stiffness, crack width, durability, and deformation requirements are satisfied.Advanced LWAC technologies include internally cured concrete, high-performancelightweight concrete, fiber-reinforced LWAC, self-compacting LWAC, ultra-highperformance lightweight concrete, and digital-image-based mesoscopic simulation. When these technologies are integrated, LWAC can reduce gravity loads, foundationdimensions, seismic mass, transportation energy, and construction demands withoutcompromising structural reliability.
