Foundations of a General Theory of Observation and the Observer
The concept of the observer is used in physics, philosophy, information theory, cybernetics, biology, cognitive disciplines, and engineering, yet different fields understand substantially different entities and functions by an observer: from an interacting physical system or measuring device to an agent, a system with memory, a bearer of representation, or a cognizing subject. The task of a general theory is therefore not to choose one of the existing disciplinary definitions, but to establish a system of relations that would allow observation and the observer to be qualified without a prior choice of origin, substrate, or specific class of realization. In the present work, the analysis begins not with the observer but with the relation of observation itself. Observation is treated as a current act or process of cognition by a subject, in which the object is the pole being cognized, while a relevant difference in reality must be causally accessible to the subject and participate in the formation of its own content. From this relation, the subject and object are successively derived as relational poles of cognition, the observer as the same subject with respect to the capacity for observation, and the Minimal Observer as the minimally sufficient integrated organization under which that capacity exists. It is shown that minimal observer organization cannot be reduced to causal sensitivity, registration, memory, computation, action, or any other isolated function. It requires the unity of causal accessibility, Own Representation, the belonging of content to the same subject, interrelated Analysis and Synthesis with the formation of Choice, the For-Self relation, Prior Structural Organization, and the connection of cognition with the continuation and preservation of subject integrity. These relations are analytically distinguishable, but the qualifying property belongs to their organization as a whole. Observerhood is thereby established as an \\textbf{emergent property of the integrated subject organization, rather than as a sum of independent functions}. The resulting criterion makes it possible to distinguish subject organization, instrumental functionality, and externally interpretable informational behavior, and also to separate observer qualification from the origin of a particular system. Biological or artificial origin is, by itself, neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition of subjecthood. Among all factually known and positively established realizations of subjecthood, no exception to the biomorphic class has been identified; however, the universal necessity of biomorphy does not follow from the present work and constitutes a separate theoretical question. Taken together, the results establish the logical order of the principal concepts, a system of necessary relations of the subject's own cognition, the minimally sufficient organization of the observer, and a general criterion of subject and observer qualification. This makes it possible to regard the proposed construction as the \\textbf{foundations of a general theory of observation and the observer} and provides a unified basis for subsequent cross-disciplinary validation, investigation of classes of realization, and further development of the theory.
