Abstract

FINDING: The Saros cycle (223 synodic months ≈ 6585.3 days) interlocks with the Metonic cycle (235 synodic months ≈ 19 years) via prime factorization, enabling eclipse prediction; a separate combinatorial result shows almost all permutations have a power that is a prime-length cycle. MATH: - Saros: 223 synodic months = 242 draconic months ≈ 6585.321 days (18 years 11 days 8 hours). - Metonic: 235 synodic months = 254 sidereal months ≈ 6939.688 days (19 years). - Prime factorizations: 223 = prime; 235 = 5 × 47; 242 = 2 × 11²; 254 = 2 × 127. - Interlock: 223 (prime) and 235 (5×47) share no common factor → their least common multiple = 223 × 235 = 52,405 synodic months ≈ 4,245 years — a near-exact eclipse recurrence (the "Exeligmos" is 3× Saros = 669 months ≈ 19,756 days, but the Saros-Metonic beat is far longer). - Saros day count: 6585.321 = 18 × 365.2422 + 11.321 (the 0.321 day shift causes eclipse longitude shift by ~120°). - Metonic: 235 = 19 × 12 + 7 (7 leap months in Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
