LANVVINVS ATER ATQVE DENTATVS : A NOTE ON CATULLUS 39.12
Abstract Catullus’ invective against Egnatius (poem 39) reveals a belief in the curative properties of certain waters for oral health. In this context, the poet’s obscure reference to the ‘black and toothy Lanuvian’ has long been enigmatic. The recent archaeological discovery of a votive deposit linked to a local spring in the ager Lanuuinus may provide an explanation.
