Pedagogies of Constraint: Navigating Contemporary Challenges in Social Work Education

Social work education is increasingly shaped by intersecting challenges that include student adversity, political polarization, institutional pressures, technological change, and global complexity. These contextual realities require educators to prepare future practitioners for uncertain and evolving practice environments while remaining grounded in the profession’s commitments to social justice, human rights, and ethical practice. This conceptual paper introduces the Pedagogies of Constraint framework, which draws on pedagogical reasoning to explain how social work educators make instructional decisions under conditions of constraint. The framework conceptualizes teaching as a process through which educators assess contextual realities, identify students’ learning needs, consider the contributions and intersections of relevant pedagogical approaches, and intentionally integrate these approaches to achieve intended learning outcomes. Five interrelated propositions are presented and illustrated through applications addressing student adversity, political polarization, global and practice complexity, and institutional constraints. The framework provides a shared language for understanding how educators navigate educational constraints through pedagogical reasoning while offering implications for educator preparation, faculty development, and future research in social work education.
