The Double Standard Paradox: Sam Altman, AI Power Concentration, and the Navier–Stokes Controversy

This paper presents a formal analytical examination of Sam Altman’s public warnings about artificial intelligence—specifically the risks of losing human control and the dangers of concentrated AI power—and contrasts them with OpenAI’s behaviour during the Navier–Stokes incident. Through a detailed study of epistemic responsibility, institutional power asymmetries, and historical scientific priority analogues, the paper argues that Altman enacted the very unilateral, opaque, and power‑concentrating dynamics he publicly frames as dystopian. The analysis demonstrates how the rushed announcement of an unverified mathematical breakthrough, the structural advantages afforded by proprietary compute and privileged access, and attempts to influence narrative and credit collectively form a contradiction between stated principles and actual behaviour. This contradiction is framed as a “double standard paradox,” highlighting how self‑exemption undermines trust, governance, and the credibility of AI safety discourse.
