Association of accelerometer measured moderate to vigorous physical activity and risks of recurrent cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality

Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is associated with cardiac advantages and health benefits. However, it remains unclear whether moderate and vigorous physical activities is associated differently with the recurrent cardiovascular disease and mortality. To examine the association between accelerometer measured MVPA and the risks of recurrent cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. This cohort study considered cardiovascular disease survivors from the UK biobank. Physical activity data were collected between 2013 and 2016. Recurrent cardiovascular disease and mortality were tracked from 2010 until March 31, 2024. The proportion of hours spent in MVPA per week, assessed by accelerometers worn on participants’ dominant wrist. Recurrent cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. A total of 4,636 cardiovascular disease survivors (69.05% men) with a mean baseline age of 60.73 (SD = 6.41) years were included. Over an average follow-up period of 9.16 years, there were 721 deaths and 256 recurrent cardiovasculardisease events. Increased MVPA intensity was associated with a lower risk of mortality (HR: 0.76; 95%CI: 0.60–0.96), while increased intensity of MVPA was linked to a significant risk for recurrent cardiovascular disease (HR: 1.7; 95%CI: 1.07–2.7). This cohort study found significant associations between MVPA and recurrent cardiovascular disease and mortality in a dose-dependent manner.
