Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the scope of academic articles containing the keywords "emergency department" and "simulation" and to reveal the development and trends in this field. The study aims to present a bibliometric analysis of the literature on articles discussing simulation in emergency department studies based on quantitative data analysis, and to identify research trends and gaps in this field. The study was conducted through a bibliometric analysis of 1507 articles published in the Web of Science database between 1989 and 2024. VOSviewer 1.6.20 was used in the analysis. The focus was on the selected keywords "Emergency Department" and "Simulation." Additionally, the keyword "Discrete Event Simulation" was included for further analysis. When examining the distribution by year, it was observed that the most publications occurred in 2021 (155 articles), followed by 2020 (139 articles), 2022 (139 articles), and 2023 (139 articles). The study demonstrates that a significant portion of the literature in the field of emergency departments and simulation has been published in high-impact journals, creating a wide influence. It emphasizes the need for fostering stronger collaboration between developed and developing countries in the future. Additionally, it is anticipated that simulation techniques, particularly Discrete Event Simulation methods, will continue to be a major focus in future research. Therefore, in addition to the keywords "Emergency Department" and "Simulation," the third keyword "DES" was added, and further analyses were conducted. The aim of this study is to provide researchers and decision makers working on this topic with a systematic perspective.
