Smart and Sustainable Buildings for Climate Resilience: Integrating Renewable Energy Systems

The construction industry is responsible for a significant share of the world's energy use and emissions, which can be reduced by using renewable energy and smart-grid technologies. Other methods include the use of recycled materials, green roofs, and 3D printing methods to reduce waste. In this study, a questionnaire survey and interviews were conducted to elicit feedback from construction practitioners and experts on the sources of renewable energy and their use within the UAE construction industry. The results indicated a high level of awareness and familiarity with renewable energy. About 87% of the respondents indicated that solar energy is the most recognized form of renewable energy, followed by wind energy with 74%. The most significant advantage of incorporating renewable energy into buildings is the environmental sustainability and cost savings. However, high initial costs and design complexities are the most significant challenges to the widespread use of such technologies within construction.
