IT'S NOT THE FORM - It's the Genius
It’s Not the Form — It’s the Genius is a speculative essay in aesthetics and art theory examining the relationship between Genius, Form, Reflection, artistic originality and critical judgement. Beginning with the older conception of genius as an attendant or guiding spirit, the essay moves through Plato’s Eidos, Kantian aesthetics and the Early Romantic idea of Reflection, particularly in Fichte, Schlegel and Walter Benjamin. Its central concern is the distinction between the living creative activity through which an artistic Form comes into being and the Rule subsequently inferred from that achievement by critics, followers and, sometimes, the artist themselves. A successful discovery may become a style; a style may become a method; and a method may eventually harden into convention. Through discussion of Picasso, El Greco, Renaissance drawing, the Virgin of Vladimir, Modernism and Postmodern eclecticism, the essay asks why exceptional works can possess a vitality that cannot be accounted for simply by identifying their formal characteristics. It develops the idea of “vibrant kineticism” to describe this apparent surplus of life, movement or generative force within achieved Form. The essay ultimately becomes an exhortation to artist, critic and viewer alike. Reflection is proposed not as the abandonment of judgement, but as the capacity to turn judgement back upon its own assumptions: to recognise a Form as a Form, to reconsider inherited criteria, and to remain alert to the moment when a once-vital artistic discovery has become merely conventional. Genuine originality may initially appear awkward, improper or even unsuccessful precisely because the Rule by which it will later be understood does not yet exist. Its concluding demand is therefore simple: learn the Forms, understand why they worked, but do not become imprisoned by them. Stay Reflective. Suggested Citation Mirza, Ed.
