Development of a volume management journey map for patients requiring hemodialysis

By developing patient journey maps, this study aims to identify the multi - dimensional needs of patients requiring hemodialysis in terms of volume management and provide insights for optimizing volume management strategies for this population. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 18 patients requiring hemodialysis between September and November 2025. Data were analyzed using content analysis, and a volume management journey map for patients requiring hemodialysis was constructed. The volume management journey of patients requiring hemodialysis was chronologically divided into five stages: pre-treatment, diagnosis and evaluation, initial dialysis, adaptation to dialysis, and stable dialysis. Across five dimensions—tasks, moods, pain points, requirements, and involved personnel—a total of 42 journey map elements were identified, including volume-related symptom management, emotional entanglement, and barriers to information behavior. These findings were integrated into a comprehensive volume management journey map for patients requiring hemodialysis. The volume management journey for patients requiring hemodialysis is prolonged and complex, with patients reporting stage-specific and multidimensional needs across the care continuum. Future efforts should focus on developing targeted management strategies based on these needs to provide precise care and support, ultimately improving the quality of life for patients requiring hemodialysis.
