Gender, Women, and Disasters
This study aims to explore and analyze scholarly discourse at the intersection of gender, particularly women, through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With growing global emphasis on inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR), the gendered dimensions of disasters remain overlooked. The study tries to identify major scholarly interventions and research trends that address gendered vulnerabilities in disasters, and to examine how these align with global development priorities. Adopting a bibliometric approach, this study systematically maps the literature on gender and disasters. It draws a comprehensive dataset of publications to examine key authors, institutions, countries, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic clusters. The analysis specifically shows the integration of SDG 5 (gender equality) and SDG 13 (climate action) in disaster-related research and policy discourses. It shows a growing interest in gender-responsive disaster governance and highlights how structural inequalities, limited access to resources, and socio-cultural constraints amplify women’s vulnerabilities in disasters. It also identifies key thematic trends, including the emergence of grassroots empowerment initiatives, capacity-building programs, and the development of inclusive policy frameworks. The study’s findings highlight the importance of embedding gender equality in DRR strategies to build resilience and promote sustainable development. By bridging gender studies and disaster governance, it offers vital insights to inform inclusive policymaking and future research. This study contributes to the understanding of how academic and institutional efforts can align with global frameworks to foster equitable and resilient communities.
