Enhancing intercultural competence through a Catalan-Argentinian virtual music exchange

Abstract Promoting interculturality in higher education presents both challenges and opportunities. This study examines a virtual music teaching exchange involving 4 teachers and 11 students from universities in Catalonia (Spain) and Argentina. Interculturality is conceptualised as a cross-disciplinary macro-competence comprising linguistic, cultural, social and interpersonal skills. Data were gathered through pre- and post-tests, focus group discussions and analyses of students’ feedback on their pedagogical and creative musical outputs. Findings reveal positive outcomes, with notable development in cultural and interpersonal skills. The virtual format was found to enhance communication, resource accessibility and structured interaction, effectively supporting intercultural music teaching and learning.
