Menace of Urbanization and Climate Change on Urban Agriculture in Nigeria's Cities

An integral aspect of this paper is to examine the nexus of urbanization, population, and climate change as well as their impacts on Urban Agriculture. Urbanization, Climate change and Cities are all closely related because any change in one will have an impact on the others. Cities as product of urbanization, contribute to climate change by burning fossil fuels, creating urban heat islands, deforestation, and other activities, and they are also affected by climate change and its negative consequences. Although urbanization plays a vital role in socio economic and political development of Nigeria, it has also significantly affected Urban Agriculture (UA). It is clear however, that the economic, political and historical circumstances or condition of a city are essential factors that facilitate or impede UA. This paper calls into question the potential threat that urbanization and climate change poses on Urban Agriculture and sustainable urban development in Nigeria. Since the increase in the activities of bandits and banditry, rural-urban migration has become an incessant phenomenon which occurs almost on a daily basis. This development therefore facilitates the urbanization of poverty. The urban poor, who are frequently located in the most vulnerable areas of cities and lack the capacity to adapt to climate- related impacts, will be disproportionately affected.
