Mental Health and Wellness in India 2047: Vision and Mission (A Strategic Vision for a Mentally Healthy and Resilient Nation)

Abstract In a developing country like India, mental health is now being recognized as an integral part of health, human development, social well-being, and national productivity. To achieve the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, it is essential for India to focus not only on economic and technological progress but also to pay serious attention to the mental health of its people. This conceptual research paper presents a detailed review of the current state of mental health in India and proposes a nationwide strategic and innovative approach for 'Mental Health and Well-being 2047' within the overarching framework of 'Viksit Bharat@2047'. This paper presents a comprehensive review not only of the current conceptual foundations of mental health and well-being in India but also of the evolution of mental health policy, existing challenges, emerging needs, and the roles played by children, adolescents, higher education institutions, workplaces, communities, digital services, and research. In this study, we have adopted a clear conceptual and policy-review methodology, drawing upon government documents, national mental health reports, legislation, and international policy frameworks. This research paper proposes ten strategic pillars for mental health development at the national level, encompassing key areas such as the prevention of mental health problems, early intervention, community care, suicide prevention, digital mental health, educational and workplace well-being, workforce development, research and innovation, social inclusion, and governance. Additionally, the paper outlines a phased national implementation strategy covering the periods 2026–2030, 2031–2040, and 2041–2047. In essence, this research paper concludes that mental health and human well-being should be regarded as central components of human capital and sustainable development. To transform India into a developed nation by 2047, we will require—at both national and local levels—integrated services, sustainable financing, a capable workforce, responsible technology, community participation, evidence-based policy, and a strong commitment to equity and human rights to ensure a mentally healthy India.
