Coccydynia and Sacroiliac Joint Pain in a Postpartum Female: A Case Report

STUDY DESIGN: Case Report BACKGROUND: While pregnancy is a risk factor for the development of both coccydynia and sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction, limited literature exists on managing them as coexisting conditions. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 27-year-old postpartum female with symptoms consistent with SIJ dysfunction and coccydynia. Specific management was prescribed for each condition, taking into account the unique aggravating factors each presented. OUTCOMES: The patient attended six visits over seven weeks. Sitting tolerance improved from 30 minutes to three hours; disability measured via Oswestry Disability Index improved from moderate (40%) to minimal (8%); and the patient reported improved function from 17% to 93% of normal. DISCUSSION: Coccydynia and SIJ dysfunction may both present as posterior pelvic girdle symptoms with overlapping clinical patterns. Knowledge of the unique features of each condition allows for improved identification and application of specific management strategies.
