Perspectives on Scientific Method Through the Prism of the Future
This scientific-philosophical essay examines the evolution and possible future development of scientific method through the relationship between analysis, synthesis, experiment, and interdisciplinary inquiry. Beginning with Aristotle and moving through Bacon, Descartes, Pascal, Newton, Hume, Kant, Mill, Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend, Einstein, quantum mechanics, deterministic chaos, and Gödel, the essay explores how scientific knowledge has progressively refined the relationship between observation, explanation, prediction, falsifiability, and the limits of formal description. A central philosophical bridge is provided by the dialogue between C. G. Jung and Wolfgang Pauli and the concept of Unus Mundus. The concept is treated explicitly as a philosophical question and source of intellectual inspiration, not as an empirically established scientific theory. From this point, the discussion moves toward general systems theory, emergence, systems biology, and multiscale science, asking how relationships between different levels of organization can be investigated without confusing analogy, correlation, mechanism, and evidence. Light serves as a recurring scientific thread linking physical interaction, molecular response, cellular processes, tissue physiology, neural processing, and visual experience, while preserving the distinct evidential requirements associated with each transition. The essay ultimately proposes the “discipline of interfaces” as one possible framework for the scientific method of the future: an approach that seeks to preserve analytical precision while enabling rigorous synthesis across disciplinary and organizational levels. PHOTENIA is presented as a methodological case study illustrating the transition from broad interdisciplinary intuition to a constrained, testable, and potentially falsifiable research question. The concluding perspective emphasizes epistemic humility, responsibility, humanity, and compassion, understanding science not as the possessor of universal truth, but as a universal instrument for seeking it.
