The Dynamic Deficit Hypothesis / Abstractions within the understanding of functional subjectivity and the Self
The new abstraction proposes to view consciousness not as a screen on which objects appear, and not as a separate module that “is aware of” ready-made representations. Instead consciousness is regarded as the continuous dynamics of a space of sensations capableof preserving history, restricting particular regions, discovering structured deficit, formingactors, acting and preserving causal connections. In this construction: В этой конструкции: • Self — the continuity of a historically self-comparing configuration.• Sensation — a change in the overall configuration relative to its own history.• Attention — a local restriction of the freedom of change.• Deficit — the difference between the expected fullness of accessible dynamics and thecurrent configuration.• Desire — a growing incomplete causal configuration.• Actor — a means of transforming or restoring a connection.• Action — part of the same space of sensations.• Memory — the preserved topology of causal relations.• Satisfaction — the reduction of a definite deficit and the transition to a new equilibrium. The key paradox of the hypothesis can be retained in the author’s original form: to sense The key paradox of the hypothesis can be retained in the author’s original form: to sense something may mean to under-sense it. This does not mean that the object is absent from consciousness. It means that experience may be born from the way the whole system discovers a locally restricted part of its own dynamics.
