Economic Growth and Inclusive Development: An Analytical Study of India's Development Trajectory

India’s economic growth story since independence has been marked by structural transformation, policy reforms, and sustained development initiatives. From an agrarian economy struggling with food shortages in 1947, India has become the world’s fifth-largest economy by 2023–24. Despite significant achievements, growth has not always translated into inclusive development, and challenges such as unemployment, poverty, skill gaps, regional disparities, and sustainability concerns remain. This paper examines India’s economic transformation through milestones such as the Green Revolution, the 1991 Liberalization (LPG) reforms, and recent initiatives including Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The study also highlights the persistent challenges and suggests policy interventions to ensure that growth becomes broad-based, equitable, and sustainable.
