Cross-Disciplinary Validation of a General Theory of Observation and the Observer: Functional Adequacy, Constitutive Integrity, and the Boundaries of Generality
The article Foundations of a General Theory of Observation and the Observer formulated a general construction of observation and the observer that begins not from a preselected class of systems but from the relation of observation itself. On this basis, subject and object were successively defined; the observer was defined as the same subject with respect to the capacity for observation; and the Minimal Observer was defined as the minimally sufficient integrated organization in which the necessary relations belong to one and the same subject. The present work tests how well this construction preserves its determinacy under independent cross-disciplinary comparison and what form of generality such a test actually supports. The final validation was carried out on a controlled corpus of 19 disciplinarily distinct cases: 16 original cases and three supplementary comparators introduced specifically after a search for conceptions in which Observerhood is associated with whole-system organization, semantic closure, or an emergent threshold. At the level of functional adequacy, 16 of 19 cases showed at least partial adequacy: seven showed adequacy with disciplinary specialization, nine showed partial adequacy, and three showed local inadequacy. Functional applicability, however, did not prove equivalent to constitutive correspondence. A strict test of the complete Minimal Observer organization across relations IMO-01–IMO-07 established no external case in which all seven relations were closed as relations of one and the same subject organization. Direct correspondence was likewise established in no case; at the level of extensional relation and subsumption, one case reached disciplinary specialization, whereas 18 remained indeterminate. The supplementary examination of Pattee, Zoria, and Mirror V2 showed that semantic closure, shared or emergent semantics, whole-organizational Observerhood, threshold or derived Observerhood, and a Full Minimal Observer represent different levels of organization and cannot substitute for one another. Cross-disciplinary validation therefore supports the proposed construction primarily as a relation-structured and system-boundary-sensitive criterion, rather than as a claim of universal equivalence among existing conceptions of the observer. Finally, expansion of the corpus did not identify any positively established non-biomorphic subject satisfying the strict criterion of the construction. This preserves the strong factual result of the first article: the entire known positively established class of subject realizations remains exclusively biomorphic, without converting that result into a proof of necessary biomorphy. The practically unresolved boundary of a new realization therefore remains a de novo artificially created subject organization, while the universal question of whether every possible subject organization must be biomorphic remains a separate theoretical task.
