Rossendale to Crewe: North-West Historians G.H. Tupling and W.H. Chaloner

Professor George Unwin was the principal founder of the study of Economic History in this country in the years before the First World War. G.H. Tupling, his protégé, was one of its first notable practitioners. W.H. Chaloner was a later one in the same department at the University of Manchester. This article compares these two historians’ major works – both hailed as seminal in importance in their time – and places them within the broader context of the rise and decline of economic history as a discipline.
