The Shadow Traveler: A Story of the NumberScape

The Shadow Traveler: A Story of the NumberScape approaches the Collatz conjecture through story, mathematical exposition, and a WidiVision way of seeing. The opening story follows Seven and its Shadow through a landscape governed by the Doctrine of Homecoming, translating the familiar Collatz process into a journey whose destination is known for every traveler examined but whose universal certainty remains unresolved. Two Illuminations then reveal the mathematics beneath the story. The first introduces the Collatz process for a general reader. The second develops the DescentScape, an accelerated odd-to-odd representation in which each journey is described by a sequence of halving depths. This representation leads to a Body-and-Shadow decomposition that separates the transformed contribution of the starting number from the accumulated contributions of the added Ones. The resulting viewpoint distinguishes contraction from actual descent and explores how residue-class addresses and backward predecessor paths illuminate the structure of Collatz journeys. No proof of the Collatz conjecture is claimed. The purpose is exploratory: to investigate what becomes visible when a familiar mathematical problem is approached through a different representational instrument, and to demonstrate the WidiVision principle that a changed way of seeing can generate new mathematical questions.
