A Three-Case Exploration of the Critical Macro-Competences of Applied Theater Practitioners in Hong Kong: Venn Diagram, Tangram, and Centipede

This article draws on Wapnick’s (Citation2017) framework of “multipotentialites” to explore key macro-competences of applied theater practitioners. Focusing on three cases—Ian, Judy, and Keanu—it examines how the practitioners conceptualize their work, competences, and identities through the metaphors of Venn diagram, Tangram, and centipede. Beyond specific theater knowledge, they demonstrate mastery of inter-and transdisciplinarity, a proactive mindset for continuous learning, and holistic thinking about the connections among disciplines. These competences enable innovative solutions and positive social change. The findings offer valuable insights for curriculum development and professional training in applied theater.
